San Diego County #1 in Digital Technology

Sunday, November 30th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Congratulations go out to the County of San Diego for developing the most useful and consumer friendly web site of any county in the United States. In a survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties, San Diego ranked #1 for counties with a population of at least 500,000.

Visit the County of San Diego web site and learn more about our county and all of the services it provides. While you are at it, sign up your cell phone or VoIP number to receive reverse 911 calls in case of emergencies such as wildfires in your neighborhood.

Elusive San Diego Billionaire Featured in ‘The Predator’

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Some billionaires seek the limelight to showcase their extreme success as entrepreneurial titans.  For example, think Donald Trump.  You will often see these billionaires in the media meccas of New York or Los Angeles.

However, did you know there are a number of billionaires who fly under the radar?  You won’t see them starring their own reality TV shows.  You won’t see them giving interviews on TV.  You won’t even seem them with a listing on Wikipedia. (Just about everybody who has had 30 seconds of fame is profiled on Wikipedia … even Joe the Plumber.)

San Diego is home to some of the unknown entrepreneurial titans who fly under the radar.  It’s hard to find information about them.  However, when it does become available, I’ll be sure to share them with you.

First up is Neal Blue, CEO of defense contractor General Atomics. A rare profile of Neal Blue can be found in the November 10th issue of Fortune Magazine.

Blue’s current company, General Atomics, has become popular of late for developing the Predator drone, which I have written about in previous posts. It has received praise for helping to win the war in Iraq to helping fight wildfires in California. The success of the Predator has brought attention to this large, but little known, employer in San Diego and its owner.

Neal Blue did not always fly under the radar. As you will read in the Fortune Magazine article, Blue and his brother Linden were featured on the front page of LIFE Magazine back in 1957 as the nation followed their successful attempt to fly over the Andes Mountains. That was only a year after Blue financed a college road trip from France to India “by selling articles to the New York Times and persuading Chrysler to donate a Dodge station wagon”.

Neal Blue showed an uncanny ability to carry through with adventures that only the most imaginative people ever dream about. This has led him to own signficant business and real estate assets around the world including uranium mines in Australia to oil deposits in Canada.

Read more about Blue’s story in an extensive interview he allowed for Fortune Magazine. You will learn how he took a desire for unmanned planes in the 1980s to overthrow the Sandinistas in Nicaragua (where he owned a banana plantation) to creating the Predator drone now used to fight the war in Iraq. I’ll entice you with one more quote from the article. “Over the course of his five-decade career he’s built a sprawling global business that spans four continents and enriched his family. But he has also made enemies and infuriated customers.”

If you are interested in learning more, you can see the Blue brothers in person when they are inducted into San Diego’s CONNECT Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in January.

Help Save The Chula Vista Nature Center

Friday, November 28th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

UPDATE: The SEMPRA Foundation has donated $125,000 to help save the Chula Vista Nature Center. An anonymous donor has pledged to match all donations dollar for dollar up to another $125,000.  Read on and consider making a donation that will be matched in an effort to keep alive this one-of-a-kind nature center in a National Wildlife Refuge.

———————————–

Four National Wildlife Refuges are located in the southwestern corner of San Diego County. This area surrounding the San Diego Bay and Sweetwater River is recognized as one of the most internationally significant wetlands in the world. Over 370 species of birds pass through the wildlife refuges during their annual migration through one of the few remaining wildlife corridors in the North America.

The Chula Vista Nature Center & Aquarium provides a birds-eye view of wildlife in this federally protected area.  Unfortunately, it is now being recommended for closure as the City of Chula Vista seeks to cut expenses. I ask you to help keep their doors open, whether it is helping to raise funds or signing a petition to encourage the City of Chula Vista’s elected officials to keep it funded.

I first learned about the Chula Vista Nature Center a few months ago as I prepared a San Diego travel web site that will be launched in the coming weeks. I took special interest in learning about little publicized attractions that I know will appeal to much larger audiences once they receive the publicity they deserve. The Chula Vista Nature Center and the National Wildlife Refuges are at the top of that list.

I visited the Chula Vista Nature Center & Aquarium last month and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the offering.

The first thing that strikes you is its location. It is very easy to reach. The parking lot is literally at the end of the E Street Exit (8B) off of highway I-5 in Chula Vista. From there, you are driven on a bus over a half-mile through the wildlife habitat to reach the Nature Center.

The wildlife habitat surrounding the Nature Center is part of the National Wildlife Refuge.  Several trails lead out from the Nature Center taking visitors to see hundreds of birds and other wildlife in their natural environment.  I live next to the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve and have hiked through just about every natural wildlife area in San Diego County. I’ve even visited the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding rainforest. I thought I had seen it all until I visited the Refuge. This is a very special area where it is amazing you can surround yourself with so much wildlife and yet still see the skyline of a major metropolitan city off in the distance.

The Nature Center educates visitors about the surrounding wildlife, its habitat, and the importance of wildlife corridors. Going beyond that, it also provides what amounts to a small zoo and aquarium. Among the birds and sealife on display, visitors get an upclose view of a bald eagle, two golden eagles, and an endangered Sea Turtle. Many of the displays are hands-on including the shark and sting-ray petting tank. This makes the Chula Vista Nature Center a great place for kids and their families. The dozens of kids I saw during my visit were having a blast. The smaller size and cost ($6 for Adults and $3 for Kids) of this Nature Center makes the visit an easy and inexpensive outing to provide a high level of wildlife exposure to young children.

The Nature Center has built a lot of momentum towards becoming a self-financed institution. Over $7 million, much of it coming from donations, has been invested in recent years to make this a worthy facility for visitors from around the world.

This will all come to an end if we can’t gather enough people to help out. The city administration will be recommending closure of the Chula Vista Nature Center at budget hearing on Thursday, December 4th as a way to cover the City’s budget gap. So, I am asking you to either:

  • Sign a petition to be provided to the elected leaders.
  • Attend the budget hearing to show your support.
  • Help encourage donations to the Nature Center to help cover up to $660,000 in annual cost currently covered by the City of Chula Vista.

You can help save the Nature Center by visiting the Save The Chula Vista Nature Center web site. There, you will be able to watch a video overview of the Nature Center and help out in one of the ways I mentioned above. You can also learn more about the Chula Vista Nature Center by visiting its web site.

This is a great facility that just needs more publicity to one day become self-sufficient. Let’s not lose all of the hard work that has gone into the development of this wildlife treasure. Thank you for your consideration.

Not sure why but I’m having trouble getting my Wordpress software to approve the following comment from Charles G. So, here it is:

I have had the honor seeing the Nature Center grow and improve with the addition of world-class exhibits that focus entirely on local wildlife – something you will not find anywhere else.

The City Of Chula Vista and most cities are facing very difficult decisions that will impact the services offered to the public, individuals who will be loosing their jobs, and the very fabric of our communities. I do not envy the elected city officials and others that must make the tough decisions that will balance the budgets.

However, the Chula Vista Nature Center is too valuable a resource to be lost. For those who have not yet visited CVNC – go see what it is all about. Those who enjoy what the Center has to offer become an annual member. Consider volunteering or making a donation – every little bit helps.

Richard Dreyfuss Teaching Civics in San Diego

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Hollywood star and San Diego resident Richard Dreyfuss is making plans to create a non-profit aimed at improving our knowledge of civics.  The timing could not be more perfect as the Intercollegiate Studies Institute just announced last week that our knowledge of civics is at an all-time low.

The latest civics survey found 68% of U.S citizens failed a basic civics test.  Unfortunately, our elected officials did not score any better on average.  You can visit the Intercollegiate Studies Institute web site to test your knowledge of civics.  This is a great time as any to brush up on your knowledge and be an active participant in our political process.

Dreyfuss noted in a recent AARP interview that he wants to do his part to save us from the “forces of evil — apathy, ignorance, and the lack of civility”. He has been traveling the country giving interviews on TV, such as an appearance on Huckabee,  to gather support for his initiative and giving public seminars.  The next seminar will be given in Dreyfuss’s hometown Monday night.  He will be speaking at San Diego State University. The seminar is free and starts at 7PM.

The Dreyfuss Initiative is aimed to increase civic education for those in Kindergarten through 12th grade.  I was not able to find a web site or details on how others can help Dreyfuss with his new non-profit.  Hopefully, something will be available soon so either I or someone else can add the details in the comments below.

As for Richard Dreyfuss’s connection to San Diego, Diane Bell reported in yesterday’s Union Tribune that he moved to Carlsbad four years ago and is now moving to Encinitis. So, if you think you saw Dreyfuss around town, it probably was him! Make sure you know your civics before you say hi.

Congratulations to the 2009 Five Diamond Award Winners in San Diego

Monday, November 17th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego finally has its first Five Diamond Restaurant – The Addison in the Grand Del Mar Resort. Serving French Cuisine, the Addison offers four course meals starting at $98.  Only four restaurants in North America were added to this year’s Five Diamond Award List issued by AAA.  Congratulations to the Addison.  We are lucky to have you here in San Diego.

Four Season Resort Aviara in Carlsbad and The Lodge at Torrey Pines once again were named to AAA’s list of Five Diamond Award Winning Hotels. Only 103 establishments in North America earned that distinction this year.  The San Diego area offers more Five Diamond hotels than such cities as Boston and Seattle.

What better place could you live to enjoy a Five Diamond Staycation! San Diego has it all – fine dining, luxurious resorts, and great year-round weather.  (It’s the middle of November and as I write this it is a balmy 90 degrees outside.)

Comments on San Diego #3

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Welcome to the third edition of comments visitors from around the world are making about San Diego.  This ought to make you feel good about living in a city where others only get to visit for a day or week.  If you missed the previous editions, start with Comments on San Diego #2.

Atlanta Journal Constitution – “It’s never easy taking that cab ride to the San Diego airport on Sunday night, the sun setting, the cool breeze blowing, the pretty ladies walking along the sidewalks, the outdoor cafes bustling, the sailboats on the harbor.

But duty calls, and we’re leaving the paradisical city with its tanned denizens, its rich assortment of tattooed locals, straw-fedora’d cruisers, wealthy tourists, hard-working immigrants, and bums — surf or street, they got ‘em all — and did we mention beauties? Of every nationality, they got those, you better believe it.”

Traveler from London – “San Diego must be one of America’s best-kept secrets, at least on this side of the Atlantic. Very few Europeans would put it at the top of their list of places to visit and yet is has a climate unrivalled by Florida and a location to surpass Los Angeles. It also has a diversity of culture and sights to match Washington, New York, San Francisco or any of the other “great” cities.”

Belfast, Ireland Telegraph – “In Southern California, where the desert meets the Pacific, you’ll find a city that combines opulence with stunning scenery.”

Salt Lake City Tribune – “Southern California’s gem of a city, San Diego, ranks as a wonderful year-round destination…”

The Independent (London) – “..San Diego, being the second city in the most powerful state in the world’s supreme nation isn’t so bad after all, especially when the city in first place just does not have the looks and location. You know who I’m talking about, LA. Give me San Diego anytime: an oasis of indulgence between the desert and the ocean.”

Slowing Economy is a Boon for San Diego Cruise Ship Industry

Monday, November 3rd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego is the perfect place to ride out any type of storm.  Obviously, the weather here is near perfect.  But, did you know San Diego is also a great place to ride out an economic storm?

Tourism nationwide fell dramatically after 9/11 as people reacted by staying closer to family and avoiding planes. As a result, people throughout the Southwestern part of the United States turned to San Diego as their vacation hot spot.  We served as the getaway vacation capital for the 10 million residents of Los Angeles and the nearly 5 million residents in the Phoenix metro area. These two cities are the largest in the Western United States and San Diego is within easy driving distance of both.  That helped to prop up our tourism industry during the weak economy at that time.

Now that our nation’s economy is going through another rought spot, here is another sign that San Diego’s tourism business will get a boost.  The Cruise Log Blog at USA Today reports Royal Caribbean Cruises is moving their 2,501 passenger Randiance of the Seas ship from the Caribbean to San Diego to ride out the current economic storm.  The theory is a lot more people will be willing to drive to San Diego rather than fly to the Caribbean during the economic downturn.  An additional 24 trips will originate out of San Diego, bringing up to 60,000 more visitors through San Diego.

It is always nice to see a bright spot in every storm.  This is just another one of the benefits of living in San Diego. If you want to see the cruise ships up close, check out my post about the San Diego Cruise Ship Terminal I made earlier in the year.

San Diego Cheese Company Places 2nd in the World

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

A few months ago I shared with you how, surprisingly to me, San Diego County leads the way in farming.  Well, here’s another surprise from our fellow food-making San Diegans.  We are also home to a cheese company that consistently wins top honors at the World Cheese Competition.

This year, the competition for the World Cheese Awards took place in Dublin, Ireland.  Our own Cantare Foods, based in Otay Mesa, won 2nd place for best Mozzarella Cheese. Cantare Foods has won several awards in recent years for their Mozzarella and Mascarpone cheeses.

If you love cheese, the Cantare Foods web site provides a number of recipies using their award-winning cheese.

You can find Cantare cheese at grocery stores all over the country. So, go out and support a local company producing some of the finest cheeses in the world.

Election Day Forecast: Free Ice Cream

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

One of the benefits of living in San Diego is we get to enjoy ice cream season year-round.  The cool treat was especially enjoyable over the past couple weeks as the temps rose to record levels in San Diego, while we got to watch the news show snow falling in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Although it’s finally cooling down, the election day weather forecast shows San Diego and much of the south will still have decent ice cream eating weather. That means we can take advantage of Ben & Jerry’s Free Ice Cream offer on election day!

Just show up with your ‘I Voted’ sticker from the polling booth and get a free scoop of your favorite ice cream. Better yet, head to the Seaport Village locations and take a picture of yourself strolling along the San Diego Bay with your scoop of ice cream and send it to your friends living in colder climates.  You will find a shop on the east end near the outdoor Gazebo and on the west end near the historic merry-go-round.  Two more great picture taking spots to send to your friends. Both of those shops will be serving free scoops from 5PM – 9PM.

You will also find Ben & Jerry’s locations at Horton Plaza and the UTC Mall but I believe both of those locations stop serving free scoops at 8PM.

Be sure to vote on Tuesday, get a free scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and enjoy San Diego’s wonderful weather.
