San Diego Parade to Be Aired Nationwide

Monday, December 15th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Move over Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and make way for the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. The USA Network will be broadcasting our parade on New Year’s Day Weekend. It will be shown on Friday, January 2nd at Noon on the East Coast and 9AM here in San Diego.

The actual parade takes place at 9AM Monday, December 29th. This is the perfect chance for you to get taped on video soaking in the warm San Diego sunshine for all your friends in the rest of the country to see.  Tell them to pour themselves some hot cocoa, cover themselves in a warm blanket and wish they were in San Diego.

Be sure to ask for the day off from work and show America that the place to be for a wintertime parade is our own San Diego. Kermit the Frog will the the Grand Marshall. You can watch the parade in person for free as it heads down Harbor Drive from the County Administration Building to the area in front of Seaport Village. However, to increase your odds of getting on TV you will need to buy $15 tickets to sit in the grandstand area in front of the Holiday Inn.

Afterwards, there will be a Family Festival on Broadway Pier. So be sure to ask for the whole day off from work and enjoy.

County of San Diego Leads Nation in Achievement Awards

Sunday, December 14th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Apparently we are getting our money’s worth when it comes to county government. For the fourth year in a row, San Diego County has earned more achievement awards from the National Association of Counties than any other county in the nation.

We won 39 achievement awards in 2008, 16 more than second place Los Angeles. The awards range from Performance Based Contracting for Probation Services to the use of a Road Pavement Management System.

Learn more about what makes our county and its government a unique model by watching this 12-minute video on San Diego County.

Great Places to See Christmas Lights in San Diego

Sunday, December 7th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Are you ready to get in the Holiday Spirit?!  San Diego may not have snow but it certainly has plenty of spectacular Christmas light displays to help you get in the mood.

My favorites are the residential light displays. I love it when a whole neighborhood comes together to brighten up the holidays for the rest of us. Most of them string their own Christmas lights and they all endure a higher utility bill so we can get in the spirit. (Thank you to all those who put up Christmas lights for the holidays!)  Best of all, there is no cost for us to see them.

A few years ago, I came across a web site for Tom Chapman with Fidelity National Title. He updates it each year with a listing of all the neighborhood Christmas light displays in San Diego. I’ve checked out a number of them and have never been disappointed. Generally, you will find at least three or four streets in each neighborhood where almost every home is covered in lights.

My favorites are in Clairemont, Poway, and Rancho Penasquitos. The display in Rancho Penasquitos offers the added benefit of viewing giant Greeting Cards designed by its very talented and creative residents.

To enjoy the residential Christmas light displays, it is best to find nearby parking and walk through the neighborhoods. Many displays include Christmas music and handful of neighbors will have parties in their driveways. If you just want to drive through the neighborhoods, watch out for the following, especially on weekends:

  • Lots of stop-and-go traffic.
  • Lots of kids crossing the street.
  • Drivers only using their fog lights to help keep the neighborhoods dark.
  • Sudden stops by the car in front of you when you they see something that really catches their attention.
  • Sudden stops by you when you see something that really catches your attention.

If driving down neighborhood streets seems too stressful, you may want to check out one of the commercial displays instead. Tom Chapman’s web site also provides a list of the professionally created Christmas light displays in San Diego.

This will be the last year for one of the more notable professionally prepared light displays – the Festival of Lights at the Wild Animal Park. This is your last chance to enjoy the light displays in this beautiful setting. Next year, the Zoological Society will create a new holiday event to be hosted at the San Diego Zoo.

Many of the Christmas light displays are already up and running for your enjoyment. Expect the rest of them to be on and ready to get you in the holiday mood by this Saturday. Enjoy the holidays everyone!

Baby Panda Bear Goes Nationwide on PBS

Sunday, December 7th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Zhen Zhen, the adorable little panda bear born just over a year ago at the San Diego Zoo is being featured nationwide this week on local PBS stations. The San Diego broadcast is tonight at 8PM.

Panda Tales – A Year in the Life of a Baby Giant Panda is an hour-long documentary about Zhen Zhen and the amazing video of her first year of life as she stumbles to find her footing with the other Giant Pandas at the San Diego Zoo. You will also learn about the plight of Pandas, whose native home in China was significantly shaken up during a major earthquake earlier this year.

The documentary was filmed by our local KPBS station and is in the process of being shown throughout the country. Those outside of San Diego can check your local PBS TV Schedule online and type “Panda Tales” in the searchbox for dates and times.

If you missed ‘Panda Tales’, watch a short video and look at pictures of the baby Panda on the KPBS web site. Even better, you can see all four Giant Pandas live at the San Diego Zoo on the Giant Panda Cam. If it happens to be nighttime in San Diego, don’t worry. You will find a link to time-lapse video at the bottom of the page. There is also a Giant Panda Blog for those that want to follow the life of the Pandas at the San Diego Zoo.

Zoo members can read more about the documentary in this month’s ZOONOOZ magazine.

Once again, those of us lucky enough to live in San Diego can see the beautiful Pandas in person. If you have not visited the Zoo lately, don’t let haste make waste. Go see the Pandas today!

San Diego is the Most Desired City for Workers Nationwide

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego is known for being a top vacation destination. New research to be published by the Human Capital Institute will show that America’s Finest City is also the most desired city for workers to land a job. The survey polled both workers and entrepreneurs nationwide.

On the bright side for those of us already living in San Diego, we can take pleasure in having achieved something that most others dream about – making a living in the most desired city in America. On the other hand, this helps prove that that we do pay a ’sun tax’ in lower wages because there is an endless supply of workers willing to take jobs in our warm playground. As for me, I’ll accept the ’sun tax’ anytime, especially now considering I can still wear shorts outside as we head into the winter months while our brethren in other parts of the country put on gloves and boots as they prepare to scrape ice off their windshields.

Technically, the study will show New York City is #1. But, when you dig into the numbers as the Union Tribune did in today’s paper regarding this story, you will learn that San Diego received the most 1st and 2nd place votes among survey participants. The Human Capital Institute added up the #1, #2, and #3 survey responses to determine the best cities. New York had a lot more #3 votes to catch up and surpass San Diego. In addition, enough survey respondents listed New York City as the least desirable city for a job making it #1 in that category as well. San Diego was nowhere to be found on that end of the list. So, in my book, San Diego is the most desirable city.

You can read more about the survey and view San Diego’s profile at Business Week’s web site. You might also want to read a blog series I wrote earlier this year on how San Diego became such a powerhouse in the biotech industry. It’s another story where San Diego’s desirability as a place to live and the vision of early San Diegans created a strong environment for attracting companies and jobs.

PETA Names Qualcomm #1 Vegan Friendly NFL Stadium

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Healthy San Diegans can rejoice in having the most vegetarian food options when attending a NFL football game. Cited for serving “bean burritos, veggie sushi rolls, vegetable wraps, veggie hot dogs, and Gardenburgers”, PETA has named the San Diego Chargers’ Qualcomm Stadium the #1 Vegetarian Friendly Stadium in the Country.

It’s probably no surprise that the #1 and #2 spots on PETA’s Top 5 List are in California, the other being Oakland’s Coliseum. However, you may be surprised that #3 is Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial, #4 is Minnesota’s Metrodome, and #5 is Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. Geez, where’s San Francisco’s Candlestick Park?

If you are a vegetarian, be sure to follow the PETA Files blog and if you are a Chargers fan you can follow them through their e-newsletter or on Twitter.

RB Alum & Injured Iraq Vet Featured in Success Magazine

Monday, December 1st, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Here is an inspirational story for entrepreneurs. If you think the odds are stacked against you, think again. Consider the story of Dawn Halfaker, a former star basketball player at Rancho Bernardo High School, who was riding in a Humvee in Iraq when it was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade.  It hit her right arm, “broke five of her ribs and bruised her lung before exploding just behind her head. Doctors didn’t expect her to live.”

That was four years ago. Today, Halfaker is the founder and CEO of Halfaker and Associates, a 90 person national security firm in Washington, D.C. with projected annual revenues of $10 million. You can learn more about Halfaker’s amazing story in this month’s issue of Success Magazine.

So, when you have a bad day, remember the story of San Diego native Dawn Halfaker and keep the faith that you will enjoy brighter days ahead.
