The Scripps Research InstituteWith over $750 million in assets and nearly $300 million in annual sponsored research, The Scripps Research Institute is the world’s largest private, non-profit biomedical research organization.

From its beginning in 1924 as the Scripps Metabolic Clinic, The Scripps Research Institute now employs three Nobel Laureates among its 2,800 Ph.Ds, graduate students, and support personnel and operates as a separate entity from Scripps Clinic.

Several of the Scripps Research Institute’s Ph.D programs rank among the top 10 programs in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. Its Kellogg School of Science and Technology is currently home to over 200 graduate students. (The school is named after the school’s patrons, who also provided the funding for the renowned Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.)

Read more about their major scientific achievements, including the discovery of a class of compounds that blocks the replication of the SARS virus.

The Scripps Research Institute became the forebearer of what has become one of the top clusters of biomedical research in the world with several research institutes, the University of California, San Diego and over 400 biotech and medical device companies locating in Torrey Pines and the surrounding area. You can read more about the other institutes that line the Torrey Pines Mesa each Wednesday in my series about the world-class research organizations in San Diego.

The proximity of these great institutes provides our local school children and residents the rare opportunity to learn more about the advances in medicine. The Scripps Research Institute offers half day programs introducing San Diego high school students to the world of medical research. For those who want a more in-depth experience, high school students in San Diego County can compete for paid research internships that includes a biotechnology boot camp and mentorship, as well as working hands-on in a research laboratory.

For local adults who enjoy detailed discussion in the sciences, there are several lectures held each week. You can see a full list on The Scripps Research Institutes’ Calendar of Events.

Directions from Google Maps. However, The Scripps Research Institute is spread over several buildings so it is best to review their detailed maps when planning a visit. Torrey Pines is less than 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego. Nearby traffic is heavy leaving the area during the evening rush hour.
