RB Alum & Injured Iraq Vet Featured in Success Magazine

Monday, December 1st, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Here is an inspirational story for entrepreneurs. If you think the odds are stacked against you, think again. Consider the story of Dawn Halfaker, a former star basketball player at Rancho Bernardo High School, who was riding in a Humvee in Iraq when it was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade.  It hit her right arm, “broke five of her ribs and bruised her lung before exploding just behind her head. Doctors didn’t expect her to live.”

That was four years ago. Today, Halfaker is the founder and CEO of Halfaker and Associates, a 90 person national security firm in Washington, D.C. with projected annual revenues of $10 million. You can learn more about Halfaker’s amazing story in this month’s issue of Success Magazine.

So, when you have a bad day, remember the story of San Diego native Dawn Halfaker and keep the faith that you will enjoy brighter days ahead.

Elusive San Diego Billionaire Featured in ‘The Predator’

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Some billionaires seek the limelight to showcase their extreme success as entrepreneurial titans.  For example, think Donald Trump.  You will often see these billionaires in the media meccas of New York or Los Angeles.

However, did you know there are a number of billionaires who fly under the radar?  You won’t see them starring their own reality TV shows.  You won’t see them giving interviews on TV.  You won’t even seem them with a listing on Wikipedia. (Just about everybody who has had 30 seconds of fame is profiled on Wikipedia … even Joe the Plumber.)

San Diego is home to some of the unknown entrepreneurial titans who fly under the radar.  It’s hard to find information about them.  However, when it does become available, I’ll be sure to share them with you.

First up is Neal Blue, CEO of defense contractor General Atomics. A rare profile of Neal Blue can be found in the November 10th issue of Fortune Magazine.

Blue’s current company, General Atomics, has become popular of late for developing the Predator drone, which I have written about in previous posts. It has received praise for helping to win the war in Iraq to helping fight wildfires in California. The success of the Predator has brought attention to this large, but little known, employer in San Diego and its owner.

Neal Blue did not always fly under the radar. As you will read in the Fortune Magazine article, Blue and his brother Linden were featured on the front page of LIFE Magazine back in 1957 as the nation followed their successful attempt to fly over the Andes Mountains. That was only a year after Blue financed a college road trip from France to India “by selling articles to the New York Times and persuading Chrysler to donate a Dodge station wagon”.

Neal Blue showed an uncanny ability to carry through with adventures that only the most imaginative people ever dream about. This has led him to own signficant business and real estate assets around the world including uranium mines in Australia to oil deposits in Canada.

Read more about Blue’s story in an extensive interview he allowed for Fortune Magazine. You will learn how he took a desire for unmanned planes in the 1980s to overthrow the Sandinistas in Nicaragua (where he owned a banana plantation) to creating the Predator drone now used to fight the war in Iraq. I’ll entice you with one more quote from the article. “Over the course of his five-decade career he’s built a sprawling global business that spans four continents and enriched his family. But he has also made enemies and infuriated customers.”

If you are interested in learning more, you can see the Blue brothers in person when they are inducted into San Diego’s CONNECT Entrepreneur Hall of Fame in January.

Richard Dreyfuss Teaching Civics in San Diego

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Hollywood star and San Diego resident Richard Dreyfuss is making plans to create a non-profit aimed at improving our knowledge of civics.  The timing could not be more perfect as the Intercollegiate Studies Institute just announced last week that our knowledge of civics is at an all-time low.

The latest civics survey found 68% of U.S citizens failed a basic civics test.  Unfortunately, our elected officials did not score any better on average.  You can visit the Intercollegiate Studies Institute web site to test your knowledge of civics.  This is a great time as any to brush up on your knowledge and be an active participant in our political process.

Dreyfuss noted in a recent AARP interview that he wants to do his part to save us from the “forces of evil — apathy, ignorance, and the lack of civility”. He has been traveling the country giving interviews on TV, such as an appearance on Huckabee,  to gather support for his initiative and giving public seminars.  The next seminar will be given in Dreyfuss’s hometown Monday night.  He will be speaking at San Diego State University. The seminar is free and starts at 7PM.

The Dreyfuss Initiative is aimed to increase civic education for those in Kindergarten through 12th grade.  I was not able to find a web site or details on how others can help Dreyfuss with his new non-profit.  Hopefully, something will be available soon so either I or someone else can add the details in the comments below.

As for Richard Dreyfuss’s connection to San Diego, Diane Bell reported in yesterday’s Union Tribune that he moved to Carlsbad four years ago and is now moving to Encinitis. So, if you think you saw Dreyfuss around town, it probably was him! Make sure you know your civics before you say hi.

Rancho Bernardo’s Cole Hamels Set to Win World Series

Monday, October 27th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Rancho Bernardo High School’s Cole Hamels, a 2002 graduate, will be the starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies’ in Monday night’s Game 5 of the World Series. Should the Phillies win the game, they will be the winner of the World Series. (I’ll be cheering for them since they’re my old hometown team!)

Cole Hamels is a 24 year-old left hander who won the MVP of the National League Championship when the Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach the World Series. Cheer him on tonight as he seeks to win his fifth game in this post season. The Phillies are odds-on favorites to win due to the strength of their #1 pitcher, who won Game 1 of the World Series.

Hamels is not the only major leaguer from Rancho Bernardo High School. All-Star Hank Blalock of the Texas Rangers is a 1999 graduate. They are just two of the 33 major league baseball players from San Diego who played in 2008.

Let’s cheer on San Diego’s own Cole Hamels as he seeks to secure the Phillies’ first World Series since 1980. Who knows, he may just secure the MVP of the World Series as well. The game will be at 5PM on FOX5.

Read more about Cole Hamels from the Philadelphia Phillies web site.

San Diego Designed Predator Wins Battle

Sunday, October 19th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

In previous posts I’ve mentioned how the San Diego designed and built, unmanned drones assisted in wildfire fighting efforts and performed environmental research.  As was noted in those articles, the unmanned drones were originally built for use in the military.

Last week’s episode of 60 Minutes provided the closest look yet at the military uses of the unmanned drone.  More specifically, the feature story notes how the Predator won the Battle for Sadr City and set the stage for the current success of the U.S. Military Surge in Iraq.

If you missed the episode, here’s the video.

60 Minutes has a separate video that provides more background information about the Predator.

To learn more about the Predator and the Global Hawk unmanned drones and their connection to San Diego, visit the previous posts noted at the top of this article.

Wall Street Journal Names Carmel Valley Company Top Small Workplace

Saturday, October 18th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Congratulations go out to ATA Engineering in Carmel Valley.  They made this year’s Wall Street Journal list for Top Small Workplaces.  Only 10 companies nationwide earned the honor.

ATA Engineering, founded in 2000 and now employing 84 personnel, solves complex mechanical and aerospace engineering challenges.  Their work includes help in the development of the International Space Station to assistance on the design of amusement park rides.

So, what does ATA Engineering do that makes it a Top Workplace? The Wall Street Journal cited 100% Employee Ownership, managers and executives being paid on the same payscale as engineering staff, all employees earning the same percentage of their salary for bonuses, and allowing many employees at all levels to be a part of company decisions from hiring new employees to determining where the offices should be located.

So, congratulations go out to ATA Engineering for setting an example for small companies across the country.  Visit the ATA Engineering web site to learn more about the company and view their engineering opportunities. Maybe you can become a member of one of the Top Workplaces in America.

Tony Hawk – From Skateboarder to Business Cover Story

Monday, October 13th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego native Tony Hawk became the sports cover boy in the 1980s as the #1 Skateboarder in the World.  He pushed skateboarding into the mainstream by setting a new standard with his death-defying tricks.  Becoming one of the first self-made rich kids, he was able to buy a home in Del Mar by the age of 17.  In the ensuing years, he won 73 out of 103 pro contests and finished in the top two in 92 of those contests.

The 1980’s sports cover boy is today’s business cover man.  Just this month, he is on the cover of Success Magazine and the first athlete-turned-businessman to be featured in Portfolio Magazine.

After tough years during the 1990s when Hawk was forced to refinance his home and eat with only $5 a day, he turned a once fledgling skateboard company into a business powerhouse. Tony’s business success in the areas of skateboarding, clothing, video games, national tours, and a New York Times Best-Seller has enabled him to create the Tony Hawk Foundation, which has assisted in the development of several hundred skateboard parks across the country. Both Tony Hawk, Inc and the Tony Hawk Foundation are based in Vista.

Learn more about our fellow San Diegan who is now gracing the covers of business magazines. You can read about the life of Tony Hawk and get his business tips in the Success Magazine article and then get more business strategy advice by reading his profile and watching several three minute video clips of an interview he did with Portfolio Magazine.

For his New York Times Best-Seller, Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder, you can read more about that on Amazon.

Daredevils to Fill the Skies Over Borrego Springs

Sunday, October 12th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Did you get a rush from watching the Blue Angels flying around town last week? How about when the Red Bull Air Races were in town?  If you have a penchant for aerobatic flying, you’ll want to head out to Borrego Springs later in the week.

The annual Borrego Springs Akrofest takes place Friday and Saturday (October 17th and 18th).  Generally, about 40+ pilots, from around the country compete in one of five aerobatic contests. You can see the types of planes by looking at the 2007 results. To get a better idea of what to expect, watch this great six minute video made at the 2000 Borrego Springs Akrofest. Coverage of the aerobatics starts about 3 minutes into the video.

You can get directions to the Borrego Valley Airport from Google Maps. If you are interested in becoming an aerobatic pilot, visit the San Diego Aerobatic Club web site.

Palomar Observatory About to Get a Whole Lot of National Attention

Friday, September 26th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Mark your calendars for November 10th. That’s the day PBS will premier The Journey to Palomar – America’s First Journey into Space. The documentary chronicles one of science’s greatest achievements – the development of the 200 inch Hale Telescope, which took its first photograph in 1949. As I mentioned in a post last month, the Hale Telescope took the clearest outer space pictures ever, of any ground or space spaced telescope, in 2007. Its ability to operate in such an impeccable manner over several decades demonstrates the level of precision and foresight exhibited by George Hale and all those who took part in the development of the telescope.

The Journey to Palomar is based on the book The Perfect Machine: Building the Palomar Telescope by Ronald Florence. You will learn how the giant mirror for the telescope provided a ray of excitement during the Great Depression. As it was transported across the country from the Corning glass factory in New York to Southern California, thousands of spectators came out to the tracks to cheer it along its journey.

Although it is in a remote location of our county, make plans to pay it a visit some day and appreciate the significance of one of our nation’s greatest science marvels here in our own backyard. Check out my previous post to learn about the different programs available for visitors.

If you are a student or amateur astronomer, check out this “once in a lifetime” opportunity being presented through a Live NASA Webcast. On October 8th, participants will get to interact with the producers of The Journey to Palomar along with America’s Top Astronomers, who are featured in the documentary and will be talking to you live from the Kennedy Space Center.
