Explore San Diego Attractions You Never Knew Existed

Friday, January 16th, 2009 by The Best Places in San Diego

I promise you will find a tourist attraction you never knew existed in San Diego.  Ninety-nine percent of you will find dozens of San Diego attractions you never heard about before. How? By introducing you to the launch of The Best Places In San Diego, the best Theme-Based Travel Web Site and Tour Company in San Diego. (Note that the tourist web site is separate from this blog about unique aspects on living in San Diego.)

Downtown San Diego's Marina District

Downtown San Diego's Marina District

Organized by Theme and Location, The Best Places In San Diego travel guide includes hundreds of attractions throughout San Diego County from the Pacific Ocean to our Peninsular Mountains and Sonoran Desert.  If you think ‘hundreds of San Diego attractions’ must be either a) an exaggeration or b) include more than just legitimate tourist attractions, I don’t blame you. I’ll explain more in a moment.

I started this project several months ago when I got tired of visiting multiple travel web sites to find all of the attractions I wanted to visit when planning a vacation. It seemed as though I was spending more time planning a vacation than I actually spent enjoying it.  (I’m not one to just set up an umbrella and sit on the beach.)

I kept encountering two basic problems:

  1. No one travel web site ever comes close to listing all of the tourist attractions. Yet, each one  lists a different set of attractions. (To use San Diego as an example, some travel sites only mention the  top attractions, others mention attractions within a particular area such as within the City of San Diego, North County San Diego, East County San Diego, the mountains, or the desert and most travel guides leave out special niche attractions such as those related to active adventures or kid-friendly attractions.) I don’t know about you, but if I’m only going to take one or two vacations a year, I want to make sure I make the most of it. I don’t want to find out after-the-fact that I missed more than half of the attractions that could have made my experience all the more enjoyable.
  2. Most travel guides either give too little information (a one sentence description and contact information),  too much information (hundreds of user reviews, many of which say basically the same thing), or outdated information (the 2009 issue of a brand name travel book still describes the former Wgasa Bush Line Railway tour at the Wild Animal Park).

So, I set out to create a travel web site for San Diego from a tourist’s perspective.  As a tourist, I want to quickly know:

  • All of the attractions (Are there lesser known attractions that are related to my hobbies or special interests?)
  • The relative location of the attraction (Is the attraction I’m interested in visiting in a place called Carlsbad 5 minutes away or 45 minutes away from the hotel I’m staying at in downtown San Diego?)
  • Transit information (Do I have to rent a car?)
  • Traffic information (Can I avoid spending my vacation stuck in traffic?)
  • Cool things I should know about an attraction (Are there behind-the-scenes tours? Is there something I can brag about to my friends when I return home?)

To accomplish this, I created a travel web site where all of the attractions are listed in Theme Based categories.  To use an example, if you like ‘Trains’ or ‘Wildlife’, pick those respective themes in the right sidebar at The Best Places In San Diego and you will find a list of San Diego attractions related to those themes.

If you are going to be visiting a particular area of San Diego County, which is nearly as big as the state of Connecticut, select that location in the right sidebar and find a list of nearby attractions.

Whenever you pull up a list of attractions for a particular theme or location, you will find a summary for each related attraction.  This summary allows you to quickly find attractions that may be of interest to you. (The one thing I’ve always liked about travel books is you can always find things quickly using the index. Travel web sites don’t generally provide you any type of ‘index’, until now.) Just click on the attraction’s title or ‘read insider details’ for a full write-up on each attraction that answers all of the things a tourist would want to know.

At the bottom of each attraction’s write-up, you’ll find links to related themes and the location so you can find additional tourist attractions you may be interested in visiting. You will also be able to post recommendations on each attraction for other visitors. If I’ve missed some perspective on what makes the attraction a cool place to visit or if you find some detail about the attraction has changed and needs to be updated, you can submit it for me and possibly others to see.

I am happy to provide all of this information to you for free because I love San Diego and I want you to make the most of your experience with this wonderful area. I don’t charge any of the attractions to be included on The Best Places In San Diego like some other web sites do. (This is another reason why some travel web sites only list a small number of ‘paying’ attractions and leave the other ones out.) There’s no need to buy a San Diego travel book. Just print out the pages of the attractions you want to visit or access the content from your cell phone. (I’m still working to improve the cell phone view so you don’t have to scroll back and forth.)

All I ask of you is to spread the word about this web site and to let me know of out-of-town friends or groups who would like an escorted tour of San Diego. Compared to other major tourist cities, tour buses are relatively non-existent in San Diego. I’d like to change that. If you have ideas on how to reach out to those who want someone else to take care of their local travel arrangements, guide them around this huge area filled with attractions, and get them behind-the-scenes tours, let me know.

So, back to that original claim about ‘hundreds of attractions’.  I did accumulate a few hundred San Diego attractions after browsing through hundreds of travel web sites, travel books, and brochures at tourist hotels, and by talking to fellow San Diegans.  This project took several months longer than I planned because there are so many attractions. Even though The Best Places In San Diego includes far more tourist relevant details on more attractions than any other San Diego travel guide I have been able to find, there is still much more to add. Let me know if an attraction you like is not yet listed and then keep an eye out for the latest attractions added to The Best Places In San Diego.

I encourage you to find a new attraction and explore everything San Diego has to offer. It is a great place to live so make the most of it!

Congratulations to the 2009 Five Diamond Award Winners in San Diego

Monday, November 17th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego finally has its first Five Diamond Restaurant – The Addison in the Grand Del Mar Resort. Serving French Cuisine, the Addison offers four course meals starting at $98.  Only four restaurants in North America were added to this year’s Five Diamond Award List issued by AAA.  Congratulations to the Addison.  We are lucky to have you here in San Diego.

Four Season Resort Aviara in Carlsbad and The Lodge at Torrey Pines once again were named to AAA’s list of Five Diamond Award Winning Hotels. Only 103 establishments in North America earned that distinction this year.  The San Diego area offers more Five Diamond hotels than such cities as Boston and Seattle.

What better place could you live to enjoy a Five Diamond Staycation! San Diego has it all – fine dining, luxurious resorts, and great year-round weather.  (It’s the middle of November and as I write this it is a balmy 90 degrees outside.)

Election Day Forecast: Free Ice Cream

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

One of the benefits of living in San Diego is we get to enjoy ice cream season year-round.  The cool treat was especially enjoyable over the past couple weeks as the temps rose to record levels in San Diego, while we got to watch the news show snow falling in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Although it’s finally cooling down, the election day weather forecast shows San Diego and much of the south will still have decent ice cream eating weather. That means we can take advantage of Ben & Jerry’s Free Ice Cream offer on election day!

Just show up with your ‘I Voted’ sticker from the polling booth and get a free scoop of your favorite ice cream. Better yet, head to the Seaport Village locations and take a picture of yourself strolling along the San Diego Bay with your scoop of ice cream and send it to your friends living in colder climates.  You will find a shop on the east end near the outdoor Gazebo and on the west end near the historic merry-go-round.  Two more great picture taking spots to send to your friends. Both of those shops will be serving free scoops from 5PM – 9PM.

You will also find Ben & Jerry’s locations at Horton Plaza and the UTC Mall but I believe both of those locations stop serving free scoops at 8PM.

Be sure to vote on Tuesday, get a free scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and enjoy San Diego’s wonderful weather.

Poway Company Makes Tailgating BBQ’s a Cinch

Monday, August 11th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Football training camps are underway.  The regular season is almost here.  Football fans are getting ready by buying tailgate grills from a Poway company, which Reader’s Digest recently said is one of the Top 100 New Discoveries.

Freedom Grills, which owns the registered trademark for “The Official Grill of Tailgating”, sells BBQ Grills that attach to the back hitch of your SUV or Pick-up Truck.  One of the tailgating grills is small enough not to require towing and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.

However, if you are one who likes to make a statement, you should check out their $250,000 World’s Most Extreme Tailgating Vehicle.

So, the next time you come across one of these cool grills as you peruse the tailgate parties at Qualcomm Stadium, or even at the local park or campground, know that it is a San Diego company that’s helped to redefine the tailgate party.

Welcome Comic-Con Attendees!

Sunday, July 20th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Downtown San Diego will be full of excitement this weekend as over 125,000 attendees from around the globe arrive for the 2008 Comic-Con Convention. In this post, I’ll describe the hoopla around Comic-Con for the locals and provide a list of resource links for Comic-Con attendees.

Comic-Con is a Huge Star-Studded Affair

The San Diego Comic-Con began at the U.S. Grant Hotel in 1970. At first, the Comic-Con convention focused on its namesake, comics. Now, it has grown to become the largest pop culture event in the world covering comics, toys, video games, and more. The Comic-Con Exhibitors page also notes this is the largest convention in the United States in terms of attendees. Exhibitors include big name companies such as BBC America, Mattel, Harper-Collins, Hasbro, and NBC.

Comic-Con is a Hollywood favorite. Major movie production companies such as Lions Gate Entertainment, New Line Cinema, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, Walt Disney, and Lucasfilm will be on hand to build up a groundswell of support for upcoming movie releases and to spot the newest trends in pop culture. Hollywood stars expected to appear for the 2008 Comic-Con include Will Smith, Kiefer Sutherland, and Dan Aykroyd. Several other notables will be speaking at the event, including writers Ray Bradbury and Dean Koontz as well as actress Noel Neill (Lois Lane).

Comic-Con Tickets are Sold-Out

Comic-Con is so popular that all single day and four day passes are sold out. Scalpers have been earning several hundred dollars reselling tickets. However, the Variety Magazine Blog shares a word of caution on buying scalped Comic-Con tickets. It appears the automated ticket readers at Comic-Con will associate tickets with the buyer’s name in their database. Those without the proper I.D. will be turned away. The Comic-Con web site notes name changes can no longer be processed but those with complimentary badges may still register online.

Traffic & Transit

The Convention starts Thursday night and runs through Saturday. Fortunately, the Padres are out of town playing in Pittsburgh. Otherwise, the Gaslamp and East Village could have been a real mess. The Trolley is running their special event Red Line and expanded Green Line Service. Attendees can view the full trolley schedule for Comic-Con at the MTS web site.

Drivers can pull up the directions for Comic-Con from Google Maps. There is parking underneath the convention center. However, if you don’t mind walking a couple hundred yards, there is a large parking garage just southeast of the convention center where Harbor Drive meets 8th Avenue.

Another option would be to exit the I-5 at 10th Street. Drive all the way down 10th Street and park at a garage around the Padres’ Petco Park. Petco Park is across the street from the San Diego Convention Center. This option keeps you from getting caught up in the traffic in front of the Convention Center and in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The Comic-Con web site also provides a map of local parking garages.

Comic-Con 2008 Schedule

The Comic-Con web site offers a convention center map and fully searchable program schedule. There will be free wi-fi courtesy of DreamWorks. If you have any trouble accessing their site because it is too busy, let me know and I’ll try to post the map and schedule.

San Diego is the Best Place for BBQs

Sunday, May 25th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

BBQ Grill with Blue Rhino Gas TankSan Diego has taken top honors as the 2008 Cookout Capital. Blue Rhino conducted a survey to identify the cities with the best weather for grilling.

San Diego finished a surprising 15th last year. That must have been due to the hot summer we had in 2006. Our weather returned to normal last summer, securing us the top spot based on having the most days that are under 90 degrees and dry.

It is nice to be reminded once in a while that we live in America’s Finest City.

Torrey Pines, Home to World Class Research

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

Torrey Pines MesaTorrey Pines Mesa is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s namesake, the Torrey Pine Tree, only exists in two places in the world, including the Torrey Pines Mesa. It is home to scenic hiking trails at the Torrey Pines State Reserve, a world renowned gliderport (which I’ll discuss in tomorrow’s post), and a world class golf course, which hosted the 2008 U.S. Open PGA Golf Championship.

It is only fitting the world’s top medical researchers have been attracted to the Torrey Pines Mesa to create one of the largest concentrations of (more…)

Capture the Best Views of Downtown San Diego

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 by The Best Places in San Diego

San Diego Skyline from CoronadoSan Diego has one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. I would not say it is on the scale of New York City or Sydney, Australia just due to the sheer size those cities offer. However, the reflecting waters of San Diego Bay in the foreground and the recent construction of several new buildings, make our skyline one to enjoy.

Great views of the city can be found from Point Loma, Harbor Island, and Coronado. I love all of them since each offers a different vantage point. Point Loma, especially Cabrillo National Monument, is great because it overlooks the city and San Diego Bay from 400 feet above sea level. Harbor Island is relatively quiet and provides a sidewalk the full length of the island so you can get exercise while enjoying the view. It is also a great place to wait for someone arriving at Lindbergh Field. I’ll talk more about these places in later posts. Today, I want to talk about my favorite view of San Diego, which comes from Coronado.

Coronado’s Centennial Park provides the closest views of the skyline. You have an unobstructed view of the tallest downtown buildings .
